Springer, Gas or AEG?
There are three types of airsoft weapons: Spring powered, gas, and AEG (Automatic Electric Gun). Your choice between the three will depend largely on your level of experience, your budget, and how you plan to use your airsoft gun.
Spring powered airsoft guns (or Springers, as they are commonly referred to) are the most popular, likely because they are also the least expensive. The average cost is less than $75.00 per weapon. Obviously, this makes them the best choice for beginners, and for those people who wish to get started in airsoft, but don’t have the funds to spend on the more expensive gas and AEG weapons.
Due to the limited range and power of spring action weapons, the primary use in more advanced competitions is in the form of a sidearm. However, there are an increasing number of springer airsoft games popping up as more people become interested in the sport, but aren’t willing or able to drop a bundle of cash on equipment at the onset.
Gas powered airsoft guns, unlike spring powered guns, do not require cocking before each shot, but are semi or fully automatic. Some gas powered airsoft guns have a feature referred to as gas blowback, which gives your gun a slight recoil, almost like a real gun. Gas powered airsoft guns do have a few drawbacks, however, the main one being that they don’t work well in cold weather, and that larger assault rifles and machine guns are no longer manufactured. (Older, used models of these weapons can sell for hundreds of dollars.) But there are plenty of gas powered pistols, rifles, and smaller submachine guns still in production, so you’ll certainly be able to find one to your liking if you choose to purchase this type of airsoft gun.
AEG airsoft weapons are the most popular competitive gaming weapon, and come in a wide variety of models including rifles and submachine guns. AEGs are battery powered, with easily replaceable battery packs stored inside the grip or stock of the weapon. These battery packs are rechargeable, and the strength of the charge can be slightly affected by cold weather. Unlike older model gas powered airsoft weapons, AEG’s are completely self contained and do not require any external connections. And, airsoft bb’s are loaded into magazines that can be quickly swapped when empty, just like their real world counterparts. These magazines are typically available in either high capacity (200-600 BBs) or low capacity (50-70 BBs), depending upon the specifications of your airsoft gun.
