Airsoft Ammo
Choosing the right Airsoft BB actually involves a little more than just finding the cheapest ones available. You’ll need to take several things into consideration when selecting Airsoft BB’s:
- The type of gun that you’ll be using. For example, the heavier weight BB’s (.28) are normally used in sniper rifles, while the lighter weight BB’s (.12 – .20) are great for target practice and just shooting for fun. Also, your particular weapon, (pistol, rifle, shotgun, etc.) may operate better using a specific weight. Review the documentation for your airsoft gun and choose based on recommended weights and your personal preference once you’ve tried several different weights in different situations.
- How you plan to use the BB’s. As mentioned previously, the lighter weight BB’s (.12 – .20) work great for target practice, while you might want a little more punch when playing in an Airsoft competition (.25).
- BB’s come in different colors. We recommend more natural colors for outdoor play, simply because they blend in better with the outdoor environment. Instead of having thousands of bright yellow or white pellets littering an area, green or camouflage colored BB’s blend into the foliage, grasses, etc., and do less visual damage to the playing field.
- Finally, even though they cost a bit more, we highly recommend the biodegradeable BB’s. These BB’s cost a bit more, and they do take a long time to break down, but they do eventually break down, and do not cause long term damage to the environment. Many of the biodegradeable BB’s come in white, however, having BB’s that will ultimately break down is preferable, even if the only color choice is white.
- Never use metal-coated BB’s. Nearly all organized Airsoft teams ban the use of metal coated BB’s.
BB’s are very inexpensive, and are available in increments of 1,000 BB’s. Prices generally range from around $6.99 or so per thousand BB’s to $24.99 or so for the best biodegradeable BB’s. There are also a variety of feeder bottles to choose from, including grenade style, to make reloading in the field faster and easier.
