Airsoft Tips: Be a Sniper

If you are interested in becoming a sniper, there are a few things you will need to procure as you prepare for the role.

  • Airsoft Sniper Rifle. The most important piece of gear you will need is a high-powered, precision-accuracy Airsoft sniper rifle. These riffles typically have an extremely high FPS (power) rating and a long barrel, allowing for more precise, long-distance firing. It is important to practice with your rifle before you assume the sniper role. The more second nature your rifle becomes, the more likely you will be able to achieve your goals on the field.
  • Scope / Optics. Sniper rifles are often bundled with scopes and/or bipods to help improve accuracy. You should have at least one decent, entry-level scope on your rifle to ensure you can keep a safe distance from your target.
  • A side arm. You will need a smaller side arm (airsoft AEGs are a popular choice) in case your position is compromised. A simple pistol and holster should give you some defense if you are charged with enemy fire in a close combat scenario.
  • Camouflage. Quality camouflage will give you the security you need to line up precision shots. Ghillie suits are a popular and effective choice. Choose one that will blend well with the terrain you plan to snipe in. Occasionally you may move between different types of terrain, such as field to forest. Make sure your camo can adapt with the move.
  • Quality ammunition. Only quality BBs will work with high-performance airsoft sniper rifles. Lower grade BB’s will break apart and jam your weapon. Worse yet, if you use cheap BBs you will void your rifle’s warranty. High quality BBs that are only sold at airsoft specialty retailers. These BB’s will also improve your performance as they improve FPS and firing accuracy.
  • Skills and knowledge. Being a sniper doesn’t mean you need to have the most expensive rifle. Skills such as marksmanship, discipline, and knowledge of the sniper role are much more important. Do your research and keep in mind that snipers don’t fire off many shots in a game… it’s about making select strategic kills without giving away your position.

Protect Your Face
With airsoft guns shooting at speeds in excess of 400 feet per second, eye injury and tooth chipping are serious concerns. Always wear eye protection such as shatterproof goggles, and consider using a mouth guard or a full face mask.
Protect Fellow Airsofters
Do not shoot anyone at close range. Always aim for the torso or chest, rather than the face or limbs. Never shoot at someone who is not wearing the proper eye/face protection.
Cover Your Limbs
It is best to wear long sleeves and pants when playing airsoft as the material will help protect bare skin from the sting of pellets. While operating with 10 times less velocity than a real gun, airsoft pellets have still been known to penetrate skin.

When transporting your gun, be sure to use an appropriate airsoft gun case to protect from accidental firing.
Keep the Orange Tip
The orange tip is required by federal law and will allow others to identify the gun as a replication rather than the real-deal.
Don’t “Joke Around” With Civilians
We’ve all heard the stories. There was an 18 year old in Missouri that shot his grandmother repeatedly with his airsoft gun as “a joke”. There was also the Ohio University men’s basketball player who shot at random strangers from a moving car as “a joke”. Not only can these jokes result in prosecution, but they can seriously injure someone.

These are guns that shoot small plastic pellets, typically six to eight millimeters around, though there is some debate as to whether the spring powered weapons are actually air guns at all. Airsoft is an exciting combat sport that is both physically and mentally challenging. Here are some basic tips to help Airsoft beginners acclimate as they get started in the sport:

Practice safety before shooting. Taking safety precautions is important for Airsoft players at all levels of experience. At minimum, protective eyewear such as goggles or a protective face mask should be worn at all times when playing Airsoft or when playing with Airsoft guns. Wearing a long sleeve shirt during play is typically advised to prevent direct hits on exposed skin. Protective vests, helmets, knee pads and other safety equipment are also available to give you optimal protection during play.

Read and adhere to the guidelines in all documentation that comes with your Airsoft gun. Each Airsoft gun is designed to be used, cleaned and cared for in specific ways. Some mistakes to avoid are using the wrong BBs, charging batteries improperly, loading BBs incorrectly and pumping a spring cocked gun too many times. Failure to comply with manufacturer recommendations can harm your gun and void your warranty.

Don’t wield your Airsoft gun in public areas. Since Airsoft guns are designed to look realistic, carrying one that is visible to others is a bad idea (and illegal). To avoid the threat of physical harm, panic or legal repercussions, be sure to keep your gun put away while you are in public.

Stay down and look around. As you gain some experience playing Airsoft, you will get used to some of the common tactics you can use to protect yourself from enemy fire. Anything you can do to give your opponent a smaller target will work in your favor. Some basic tactics to get started are staying low to the ground as much as possible and peeking around obstacles rather than over them, which will help minimize your exposure to opponents.
