Focused attention to detail is the norm, particularly when it comes to ‘MilSim’ (military simulation games) and players seem to enjoy this aspect nearly as much as they do engaging in airsoft combat. Their historic selection of custom unit patches and ‘call signs’, their dedicated study and employment of military tactics and strategies, their theater-specific attention to weaponry, uniforms and equipment and their often long-distance travel to airsoft facility ‘combat towns’… all serve to more closely mimic real-word combat. Unlike paintball, airsoft is a sport of honor (there’s no greasy marker paint involved), and relies upon those engaging in the sport to call ‘hit!’ when they’ve been struck with an airsoft BB projectile. Simple failure to do so lessens the illusion of authenticity airsoft players strive to maintain, and indeed causes frustration and anger for the participants who approach the code of airsoft conduct seriously. Not unlike the youthful game of ‘Cowboys and Indians,’ airsoft requires one’s acknowledgment of being ‘killed,’ and for anyone who engaged in the former as a child, they can attest to the irritation they experienced following having an inarguable drop on a playmate, only to hear them reply, ‘Nuh-uh! You missed me!’ If recollection serves, such dishonest interaction immediately sapped all enjoyment from playing ‘Custer’s Last Stand’ as a boy, and the same can be said for the sport of airsoft.

If you are reading this, then more than likely you’ve engaged in the sport of airsoft, and have therefore either witnessed dishonesty in hit calling, or worse, have been the culprit. Unfortunately it seems that every airsoft field has one: a player who’s tarnished their reputation by consistently not upholding the honor code, and whose name has subsequently become analogous with dishonesty.

Since we have all heard the old adage that a team is only as strong as its weakest player, I thought it would be valuable to address ways in which you can improve as an independent player. Strong players do, after all, enhance the team.

Know your weapon and gear. Do some basic training, including some ground work, such as running and crawling. Get familiar with the weight and maneuvering limitations of your gear. Learn what works well with your equipment dimensions.

Improve Your Accuracy. Some people think the quickest way to become a better player is to upgrade your weapon. Upgrades are awesome, don’t get me wrong, but they are not a quick fix for a bad shot. The truth is if you want to improve your form and accuracy, you have to practice. The good news is… practicing is really fun. Here are a few things to keep in mind when working on your accuracy:

  • Always aim for a small, specific area on the target – not the target as a whole. Keep your eye on that small area rather than glancing around.
  • Grip high on the gun so that your middle finger is high on the trigger guard. A higher grip will give you more control regardless of the weapon. It will improve your aim and ease recoil.
  • Use your fingerprint area to slowly squeeze down on the trigger. This will limit jerking and allow for more control over the gun. Try to make this a fluid movement; this is especially important if you are using a sniper rifle or pistol.
  • The farther away you are, the higher you will have to aim to hit your target. Practice different ranges and learn what works best for you and your weapon(s).
  • Be sure to practice shooting while moving around.
  • Different guns will have a different feel, be they gas, spring or electric airsoft guns. The more you use it, the more instinctual your weapon will be to you.

Know the Terminology. Be sure to research the different war terms that you may encounter on the field. If you are told an enemy fighter is at your 6 o’clock, it’s better to instinctively know what that means than to mentally calculate it on the field. There are a number of airsoft glossaries out there worth reviewing. You don’t need to know every term, but a solid understanding will help you.

Know the strategies. Most wargames are broken up into teams that are either offense-oriented or defense-oriented. Defense-oriented teams tend to be grounded in a specific area, while offense-oriented teams are on active attack, trying to gain ground. A good strategy if you are on the defense is to find a position that provides both cover and access to enemy targets. The more hidden you are, the better. If the enemy cannot figure out where the shots are coming from, you have the chance to do more damage. If you are on the offense, your main two objectives are determining where harmful fire is coming from, and removing the origin of that fire, thus allowing you to gain ground. It is surprisingly difficult to find a tactically hidden defensive player. Offensive players should try to engage the enemy with minimal movement or noise. Surprise is really the best weapon on the field.

Be fit. You will need to be able to run, crawl, and dive… all with heavy gear. The more physically fit you are, the better you will be on the field.

Be safe and have fun. Wear the right protective gear, use good judgment, and the more you play, the better you will be.

Type of Airsoft Pistols

There are several type pf airsoft pistols available on the market. They are categorized based on the mechanism used to propel BBs. There are three major types of air soft pistols that are manufactured: Spring airsoft, electric airsoft, pressurized gas pistol, hybrid airsoft.

  • Spring Airsoft Pistols

These are the cheapest of all airsoft pistols, usually in the less than 10$ range. These have a relatively low quality and life span.

  • Gas airsoft pistols

These work on compressed gas like HFC- 134a gas or green gas.

  • Hybrid airsoft pistols

These use individual shells filled with gas and a single BB. Usually very expensive, some revolvers use this system.

  • Electric airsoft pistol

There are two varieties of electric airsoft pistols on the market. The airsoft electric pistol (AEP), which uses durable metal internal parts and an electric blowback (EBB) version, which uses cheaper plastic internal parts and has a moving slide.

In an airsoft electric pistol, electric motor, powered by a rechargeable battery compresses a spring which creates a burst of compressed air to propel the pellet. All together, this complicated mechanical assembly is referred to as the “gearbox”.  Airsoft electric pistols are the most popular type and offer some great advantages over springers, particularly in terms of the rate of fire and shot distance. AEPs have 2 firing modes – semi automatic and fully automatic.

Because of the quality gearbox design, airsoft electric pistols can last for a very long time. It is not uncommon to have an AEP survive many games with no performance problems.

Airsoft electric pistols offer a number of advantages over either spring or gas pistols. The gun does not have to be cocked before each shot, which makes the gun capable of shooting a lot faster than a springer. There’s also no need to purchase, store and transport compressed gas, which makes the cost of ownership of an electric pistol cheaper than that of a gas pistol.
