The realistic look and feel of an airsoft gun is also one of the few drawbacks of airsoft guns. In public, airsoft guns can easily be mistaken for real guns, and therefore, extra care and precaution should be taken so that others do not believe you are carrying or brandishing a real weapon.
There have been instances where individuals have been arrested and even shot over reckless or threatening behavior with airsoft, bb, and other toy weapons. Parents, in particular, should make certain that their children are fully educated in all areas of airsoft weapons safety, including proper storage, transport, care, and handling.
Basic Airsoft Safety Practices:
Here are a few basic safety practices to follow whenever you’re handling your weapon:
- Always wear the proper, protective eyewear when using your airsoft gun, target shooting, or participating in any type of airsoft activity. Proper, protective eyewear refers ONLY to goggles rated ANSI Z87.1 or paintball goggles . Military sun/dust goggles, ski goggles, sunglasses, regular eyeglasses, etc., are not strong enough to withstand a direct hit, and therefore, do NOT qualify as proper, protective eyewear.
- Never point or shoot at another individual who is not wearing proper, protective eyewear.
- Never point or shoot at objects such as automobiles, houses, windows, etc.
- Always handle your airsoft gun exactly as you would a real weapon, treating it as loaded at all times, and keeping it pointed downward at the ground when walking, etc.
- Transport airsoft guns carefully, preferably in a gun case (soft or hard, whatever your preference). This also will serve to protect your guns from dust, moisture, and unintentional damage.
- Never take your airsoft gun to a public place, such as a park or school, unless there is an organized airsoft activity at the location.
- Never mix BB’s or paintballs into an airsoft game.
While there are some basic safety rules to follow, airsoft is not considered a dangerous sport, as long as everyone understands and plays by the rules. Remember, be safe and HAVE FUN!
